Mardi Himal Trek

The Mardi Himal Trek is one of the premier short-duration treks in Nepal’s Annapurna region. It acts as a quieter, less-crowded alternative to the neighboring Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trail. What makes Mardi unique is that you spend days walking directly along a high, narrow alpine ridge, putting you face-to-face with the iconic sacred peak Machapuchare (Fishtail Mountain).

This trek combines the highlights of Everest Base Camp, Gokyo Lakes, Kala Patthar, and the remote valleys of the Khumbu region, making it the ultimate Himalayan adventure for experienced trekkers.

Mardi Himal Trek Requirement

  • Original Passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months from your trek start date, along with a valid Nepal tourist visa.

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): The mandatory regional permit replacing the Sagarmatha permit. Cost is NPR 3,000 (~$23 USD) for international trekkers / NPR 1,000 for SAARC nationals.

  • TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System): The mandatory digital safety registration card. Cost is NPR 2,000 (~$15 USD) for international trekkers / NPR 1,000 for SAARC nationals.

  • 2 Recent Passport-size Photographs: Required for processing your ACAP and TIMS paperwork.

  • Mandatory Licensed Guide: Under Nepal’s safety regulations, you are legally required to hire a government-licensed guide through an authorized agency. Free independent solo trekking is not allowed.

  • Physical Fitness Preparation: Suitable for moderate trekking involving 4 to 6 hours of daily walking over stone steps and dirt trails, with a longer 7 to 8-hour push on summit day.

  • Altitude Capability: Ability to safely acclimatize and trek up to 4,500 meters (14,764 feet) at Mardi Himal Base Camp (which is significantly lower and gentler than the 5,000m+ thresholds of the Everest region). Prior trekking experience is a bonus but not required.

  • Travel Insurance: Mandatory policy that explicitly covers medical expenses and emergency helicopter evacuation up to 4,500 meters.

  • Personal Trekking Gear: Warm insulation layers (including a down jacket and fleece) suitable for temperatures that drop below freezing during early mornings at High Camp and Base Camp.
